Isn't this the MOST PRECIOUS birthday girl dress, EVER!? This was our niece, Sarala when she turned one. Brandy was so sweet to share this dress with us for Adeline's first birthday. Brandy will find this funny after our recent conversations on kids clothing sizes, during which I admitted that I am horrible at judging sizes. (Due to having a teeny preemie for our first AND using cloth diapers which make clothes fit funny.) It also doesn't help that our kids have LONG torsos and short legs. Anyways...
I went to try the dress on Adeline with the shirt I had to go under it - and it was HUGE. It looked a bit like a pillowcase that went all the way to her ankles! She just kept getting twisted up in it. :( I'm certain she'll be able to wear it for her 2nd birthday. With leggings or something...
Luckily, I tried to plan ahead a few months back and bought her several dresses at the consignment sale. One of which was to be her birthday dress (before I knew of the cupcake dress). However, I am once again not a good judge of size and it is also HUGE. So.....here is our last option...
When I say last option - don't think my child has only three dresses. We have plenty - but none were what I imagined her wearing at her first birthday. This dress above is one that I bought at a Pottery Barn Kids outlet when I was pregnant with Adeline. The tag says 1.97 - but I'm fairly certain I got at least 30% off that. (Do you remember, JoNeel?)
The only problem being that it had a monogram on it that obviously wasn't Adeline's. My plan was to cover it up and this is the best I could do - just stitching on a grosgrain ribbon for a BIG bow. I think the bow is cute and this should work perfect for her first birthday! Oh the drama of dressing a little girl!
This next project is one that I've been wanting to do for a long time. My friend Sarah posted on her blog about the banner that she made after seeing one at Pottery Barn Kids. I too had seen them and always thought it would be neat to have one - so here it is! Our first birthday banner!
You can't really see the banner well in the first picture - I'll get a better one at her party. But here is a close up. I picked out five coordinating fabrics (pinks and greens) and got about 1/4 yard each. If you go and visit Sarah's blog for instructions - I did a few things different. I just cut out the triangles and stitched them together right sides out. Then I used pinking shears to trim the edges. I also used double fold bias tape for the top instead of grosgrain ribbon. Mine is quite long too - but I was hoping to cover a large window in Gigi's kitchen, since that is where our party will be.
Oh, one more thing. Ours doesn't say "Happy Birthday" yet, as I can't find the letter "D" anywhere in Raleigh! I'll get that part done before her 2nd birthday! I also plan to make another one in slightly more boyish colors for Will's subsequent birthdays. We'll see...
Stay tuned for some super cute FIRST BIRTHDAY pictures! We can hardly believe our sweet little girl is ONE. It seems like yesterday I was stuck on my couch for week five of bedrest!

Hey Christina, I know this comment doesn't go with your post but I wanted to thank you for the advice. I will definitly try what you mentioned but it is good to hear from someone else who has been there. Today I feel like a terrible mother but I have to remember tomorrow is a new day and kids are very forgiving. Hopefully Marisa will catch on soon! Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
